Mary has been with NCICC since the very beginning. She was one of our first volunteers to help start NCICC about 5 years ago, after volunteering for Casa de Amistad for 10 years. Long before NCICC began offering legal services, Mary began by teaching ESL classes to small groups of students. Mary loves volunteering for NCICC and is happy to see how far the organization has come, expanding to offer tutoring for the citizenship test and other important legal and social services.
"My heart is in this,” says Mary. “I feel that we all should have the chance to become what we choose to become." Mary says that she is energized by seeing how hard the students work to reach their goal of citizenship. She knows it is difficult for them to reach this goal, and feels that helping out as a tutor at NCICC gives her purpose. For Mary, the most rewarding part of volunteering with NCICC has always been to see each student pass their citizenship test: "It is so great to see a student pass the test and then help other family members to pass the test as well."
We are so thankful to have had Mary volunteer with us for all these years and are excited to see how she continues to make an impact on the lives of NCICC students in the years to come.

Mary ha estado con NCICC desde el principio. Ella fue una de nuestras primeras voluntarias en ayudar a iniciar NCICC hace aproximadamente 5 años. Se unió a los esfuerzos de NCICC después de ser voluntaria para Casa de Amistad durante 10 años. Comenzó enseñando clases de ESL a pequeños grupos de estudiantes. Siento que todos deberíamos tener la oportunidad de convertirnos en lo que elegimos ser". Mary dice que le da fuerza y felicidad al ver que duro trabajan los estudiantes para alcanzar su meta de ciudadanía. Ella sabe que es difícil para ellos alcanzar esta meta, y siente que ayudar como tutora en NCICC le da un propósito. Para Mary, la parte más gratificante de ser voluntaria con NCICC siempre ha sido ver a cada estudiante aprobar su examen de ciudadanía: "Es hermoso ver a un estudiante aprobar el examen y luego ayudar a otros miembros de la familia aprobar el examen también". Según Mary, el propósito de NCICC es ayudar a los inmigrantes brindándoles servicios educativos y legales para adquirir las habilidades y el conocimiento necesarios para aprobar su examen de ciudadanía. Estamos muy agradecidos de haber tenido a Mary como voluntaria durante todos estos años y estamos entusiasmados de ver cómo continúa teniendo un impacto en la vida de los estudiantes de NCICC en los años venideros.
